Geocache Poker Stroll

On Sunday, September 15, plan to meet old friends and make new ones as URISA presents the Geocache Poker Stroll. Clues and GPS coordinates to five notable establishments will be provided to you as you stroll along Downtown Providence’s scenic streets in teams. At each destination, beverages will be available for purchase if you so desire.  The rules are simple:

  1. Meet Sunday evening (7 PM – Omni Providence hotel lobby) to divide into teams and receive GPS units
  2. Begin by following the coordinates and the clues to reach your first destination.
  3. Once there, enjoy a beverage of your choice, if you wish, and collect your team’s envelope containing the first of five playing cards that will make up your winning hand in Poker. Do Not Open the Envelope.
  4. Receive your next clue and coordinates.
  5. Continue to the next destination until all five playing card envelopes are collected.
When all teams have completed their mission, each team’s envelopes will be opened to reveal the winning hand!

GIS Return on Investment
Determining the Return on Investment (ROI) for GIS can assist in securing support and funding for the project/program.  Developing the metrics for comparing the costs associated with the implementation, operation and maintenance verses identifying and quantifying the benefits can be a daunting task.  This workshop will present a method to accomplish this goal.

Emergency Preparedness for GIS
As GIS goes from being a silo technology in an organization to an integrated enterprise solution, there is a pressing need for cross training on the non-technical disciplines GIS staff is being asked to support. Specifically, public safety (emergency management, police and fire services) and the ridgid work flows which accompany their daily duties, often prove foreign to those unfamiliar with these specific disciplines.

Maptionary!

Description: Think pictionary, but for maps! Teams will be formed to recreate a map, but access to the map is restricted.  The best recreated map (according to the audience) will win a prize!

Process:
Divide all participants into 4 groups(determine max number of people per group). Each group will be given a correct map and another image of the same map but distorted. Each group will be given 20 sec. to look at the first image and start trying to replicate the image as a group. Each group has the ability to look at the map, but each time the map will be flipped to the other image. So one turn they see the correct map and another time they see the distorted map. Between each viewing the participants will have to wait 7 minutes before they can look at the map again(we can determine a different time). The goal for each group is to recreate the image. Once the game has started those entering the event late will not be able to join in, but are rather automatically part of the audience used to judge this event. Each group will present their map to everyone else and then we will reveal that there were in fact two different maps that they were looking at. At the end there will be a raffle or we need to determine what it means for them to win. Should the winner be the group that recreates a map that matches one of the images presented or do we want the winner to be the group that draws the most distorted image combining components from both maps?

Storytelling, Cupcakes & TV
Telling our stories helps us communicate and build consensus. While the Internet has opened up new and creative ways to build and share those stories, low-tech/high touch can work wonders too! Further, the story of GIS is also told when GIS analysis and digital mapping shows up film and television. Sometimes it is "fantastical" - really, who wouldn't want those CSI apps? - but sometimes they show real, cutting edge technology. This session features both high tech and high touch ways to communicate and tell our stories.

Attendees will learn a complete Lidar data management strategy, including: how to catalog their data; when to use LAS Datasets, terrain Datasets, and Mosaic Datasets; what analytical options are available for Lidar; how to fuse Lidar data with other spatial and operational layers; and techniques for making Lidar data more accessible.

By utilizing the ArcGIS platform, organizations will be better able to support informed decision making by providing simple and timely access to your Lidar and Imagery.

Keynote Address
GIS-Pro is very pleased to welcome David Salzer and Patrick Santoso from the University of New Hampshire’s Technology Transfer Center.  They presented the keynote address at the 2013 GIS/CAMA Technologies Conference to rave reviews. You’re in for a treat!

New Hampshire Mosaic: The Power of a Composite Land Base
Governments around the world are awakening to the power of composite land bases and the efficiencies and cost savings that they can yield.  In the US, multiple states including New Hampshire have begun developing composite land bases.  The New Hampshire Mosaic is a compilation of GIS parcel boundaries and computer assisted mass appraisal (CAMA) data, sourced from each of the 235 taxing jurisdictions in the state.  Property information is augmented with real estate transfer information on a weekly basis from each of the 10 County Registries of Deeds.  New Hampshire Mosaic is being leveraged by over 10 state agencies in a variety of disciplines.  Learn about the Mosaic and its utilization, methodologies, workflows, and the potential challenges of large scale composite land base development.

Water - Our Most Important and Critical Resource

Recent studies show that thousands of miles of underground pipes that move water from treatment plants to taps are leaking: anywhere from 13-30%. At the same time, wastewater and stormwater systems are rapidly aging, allowing pollutants to flow into rivers, lakes and oceans. Learn how various organizations are using GIS to depict threats and hazards using map services and other technologies that incorporate analysis tools into their design.
